2 3 Starry Splendors Round 2, Match 3: Starry River of the Sky vs Splendors and Glooms

As luck would have it, I predicted to this match up: “No idea, coin toss gives it to Splendors and Glooms.”

Thanha Lai admits to not always finishing books; she uses the fifty page rule and then flips through. I LOVE when people admit to this! I DNF books all the time doing a variation of this.

Of course, she does read both of these books and ends up deciding, “But I’m told I must choose one, so I shall choose Splendors and Glooms.  Now I will quickly send off this review before I flip flop, again.

I am partially right: right in that I picked the right book, but wrong in the reason (no coin toss this match).

  1. This was a hard match for me. I loved both books. I became immersed in their worlds and caught up in the characters. If forced, I may have chosen Starry River of the Sky if only because I thought it was a little bit more elegant. Either way, both great books and I’m glad to see a middle grade book advancing.

  2. Man, I don’t know. Both books in next week’s contest are on a roll. I haven’t read No Crystal Stair yet so I can’t make a completely informed choice. I requested it from the library as soon as the contenders were announced and my copy just came in today. Conceivably, I could have it read before the results are posted tomorrow morning but realistically I won’t.

Final: Splendor and Glooms, Code Name Verity, and The Fault in Our Stars (sigh). I had Bomb in the final 3 instead of The Fault in Our Stars.

  3. Oops, I called that wrong. Now, we just have to wait to see who rises from the dead on Saturday. Please, please, please let it be VERITY.

  4. I am so invested in VERITY rising from the dead. I have a copy of NO CRYSTAL STAIR at home, I think I may read it after vacation to appreciate all the love.
