Teaser: Froi of the Exiles

Froi of the Exiles by Melina Marchetta (Candlewick Press, 2012) will be published March 2012. My full review will appear then; in the meanwhile, my tease — and tease it is — is I loved, loved, loved Froi. Count this as my first Favorite Books Read in 2012.

If you haven’t read Finnikin of the Rock yet (my review), please do so now so you can read Froi. Do you have to read one to read the other? No, but it will be a richer reading experience.

Brief synopsis of The Lumatere Chronicles (Finnikin is the first book, Froi the second): a rich, fully detailed fantasy series where war and elite power games have left scars on both the land and the people. For fans of Megan Turner Whalen. Also, given the ages of the main characters (late teens), these fall into “crossover” territory: bookstores and libraries would serve their readers by putting this in both the YA and adult sections.

Review copies: reviewed from ARC from publisher; and also copy from author.

  1. I heard about this book long before I got it a couple weeks ago, but I was surprised to see this billed as the Lumatere Chronicles now, the implication being there will be more to come. Do you know how many are planned?

  2. March seems like such a long time away now! I’ve been waiting for this one ever since I finished “Finnikin” last year. I’m so glad you loved it, since you led me to Finnkin in the first place. I know I won’t be disappointed.

  3. You, madam, are a teazing, teazing creature. Have you no compassion on my nerves? At least now there’s a release date . . . thanks (although it may not sound like it) for the review!

  4. Jonathan, right now I just know about three (Finnikin, Froi, Quintana). I’m curious (and trying to find out) whether it was always 3 books, because IMHO (or IMNTBHO) I thought Finnikin worked as a standalone.

Elizabeth, yes, and thanks for letting me know about the typo. For some reason, I ALWAYS make that mistake and usually fix it. I have no idea why my brain refuses to retain the correct way.

Nicole, it is so, so good.

    Sondy, yes you must!

Meredith, I’m glad you loved Finnikin and fingers crossed you end up loving Froi just as much as I do. There’s nothing like being able to gush over shared love of a book.

Maureen, I am a teasing tease from Teasadonia.

CLM, can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Finnikin.

  5. I hope you appreciate my reading spoilers so you don’t have to! I found an interview with Marchetta where she explains that after she was done with Finnikin, and as she was in other projects, she kept thinking of Froi. Also, she intended one book, but due to how long it ended up being, it was broken into two. She is still working on the third, Quintana of Cheryn, which will be published next year.
